Weight Loss & Acupuncture, Does it really work? Print E-mail
Written by Eva Luneta

With the New Year , it’s time to start shedding those extra pounds you gained from cook-outs, birthdays, anniversaries & holiday  parties. With so many infomercials on TV about diet pills, exercise machines to flatten your belly, foods with low/high glycemic index & so forth, do you really know what’s for real? The equation less food + more physical exercise = weight loss is not that simple anymore. Do you know why?

In the world of acupuncture, we believe that for you to lose weight & maintain it, you need to pay attention to other medical problems that you have. For example: if you have anxiety, depression & you are overwhelmingly stressed out, you will  have a tendency to seek out comfort foods like chocolates, ice cream, pies, etc. It’s the same thing if you have migraine, back pain, knee pain, neck/shoulder pain or any kind of aches or discomfort. Somehow your body will find a way to comfort itself by telling you to eat, & eat & eat.

Hormonal Imbalance is another factor why people especially women gain weight. With estrogen levels & progesterone acting like a yo-yo, no wonder your weight does too.

Some medications like prednisone, anti-histamines, calcium pills, thyroid pills & some anti-depressant pills make it harder for you to lose weight.

Constipation which nobody likes to talk about is an important factor to consider when you are trying to lose weight. If you move your bowels once or twice a week instead of one or two times a day everyday, these toxic wastes are extra weight your body does not really need. You eat 3x a day at least, so why not move your bowels with same frequency?

If you suffer from insomnia, hot flashes or night sweats, you have a tendency to eat more the next day because your body needs comforting.

So how can acupuncture help you lose weight? Acupuncture helps you to relax and reduce your anxiety by affecting your parasympathetic nerve. Parasympathetic nerve is the opposite of sympathetic nerve. Whereas sympathetic nerve gives you the “flight or fight response”, your parasympathetic nerve makes you relax & mellow down. When the body is at rest, blood flows to the internal organs, cells regenerate, foods get digested properly, and toxins get broken & eliminated. When you are relaxed & less stressed out, you tend to get a better nights sleep. Having a good night sleep gives you more energy, helps overcome your craving for food and/or enhances your metabolism & therefore increases your willpower to succeed.

Acupuncture is also very good for pain relief. So why take pain pills that will give you that extra weight when you can have acupuncture?

A Poem for Eve Luneta MAOM, LAC, C.H. (Chinese Herbology), RN, Diplomate NCCAOM on the 10th anniversary of Acupuncture & Oriental Medicine Services of New England, Inc.

by Rosalie

When I first came to Eve in 2004,

I suffered with Arthritis, Burstitis, Tendonitis, and a lot more.

Everything hurt, I was lucky to stand,

And that was with pain medicine to beat the band.

When I tried to raise my arms, to golf, or to swim,

I paid the price. I could not win.

On top of that, my circulation was poor,

My hands and feet tingled, I couldn't take it anymore.

I could hardly breathe because I had asthma, Bronchitis and COPD.

My lungs were shot, along with the rest of me.

Of course, I had headaches because of the stress,

And along came high blood pressure because of the rest.

Eve came to the rescue; thank you Dear Lord.

She saved my life and helped me so I could do more.

I can now play golf, travel and go to the shore.

With her kindness and knowledge and needles and pins,

I am not only her patient, I became her friend.

Thank you Eve for all that you have done for me and for others.

Everyone should recommend you to help their friends and mothers,

Eve still takes out of town classes to stay abreast,

So that she can give us all her very best (she always does).

Thank you Eve!

Acupuncture & Traditional Chinese Medicine: The Pathology of Pain Print E-mail
Written by Eva Luneta

No one wants to live with pain. Whether the pain is due to sciatica, herniated disc, arthritis, migraine, etc. it is the body's way of telling you that something is wrong and out of balance and should not be ignored.

The basic concept of pain in Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine revolves around the flow of energy called "QI" (pronounced Chee) inside the body. This intrinsic energy needs to flow freely to prevent illness. Think of a plug of hair obstructing the drain pipe. What happens if you ignore the problem for too long? What about if there is lots of debris in the river, what happens to the water? It gets murky, muddy and pretty soon the water in the river stops flowing.

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, arthritis falls in the category of "Painful Obstruction Syndrome" (POS).The main symptoms are pain, numbness and/or swelling of the joints, stiffness, and fatigue. In Chinese medicine, there are five different kinds of POS. Wind type is characterized by pain moving from joint to joint. Damp type is fixed pain with feeling of heaviness, numbness and swelling of the joints and aggravated by damp and rainy weather. Cold type is severe pain in one joint aggravated by cold weather. Heat type is also very severe pain but with sensation of heat, redness and swelling of the joint. The last one is Bony type where painful joints are swollen and there is already some deformity of the extremity involved.
